23-2021 – Susan Nemeth – Inlaid Porcelain

June 6 – 12 2021
Intriguing designs and satin like surfaces without glaze
Handbuilding. For all
Introduction
In this course we will explore colour, pattern and imagery using various techniques of staining and layering slips and porcelains.
Techniques taught
The technique involves laminating layers of coloured clays, inlaid with hand-cut patterns and then rolling and stretching the flat sheets, ready for press moulding or slab building. The program will include painting and pouring slips, impressing clays, utilising stencils and adding fine inlay to create clay collages. The decoration will be integral. Finishing techniques will enhance the qualities of the clay to produce a soft, matt surface before the works are fired, supported in sand and saggers.
Teaching method
There will be plenty of demonstrations as well as chances to experiment and develop the necessary design and technical skills to make colourful, inlaid bowls, plates, vases and tiles.
The Artist
Susan Nemeth is a designer and maker of handmade porcelain vases, bowls and decorative platters. She trained at Bournville School of Art, Wolverhampton Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. The decoration is integral using layers of coloured clays and slips. She has been awarded internationally and is mentioned in many publications. www.susannemeth.co.uk
