30A 2021 Alistair Danhieux – Naked Raku

July 25 – 31, 2021
Painting with smoke
Throwing and hand building techniques. Intermediate
Introduction
The aim of the workshop is to explore the technique of Naked Raku. Participants will leave the workshop with enough experience of the technique to be able to continue creating beautiful pieces independently.
Teaching Method
Through practical demonstrations and hands on work, we will go through all steps of creating with the Naked Raku technique, from construction to the final firing. Participants will use their preferred method of making for their pieces (hand-building, throwing, slab, etc.) We will then cover different methods of burnishing, preparation and application of decanted slip, preparation for the firing with different decoration techniques and finally, firing and post firing reduction. All pieces made by the participants will be taken home at the end; however the emphasis is on learning the technique rather than on production.
Materials
We will use a white grogged stoneware and slips and glaze specially prepared for Naked Raku. The workshop is held in the Nature Studio. Open on three sides, the studio is located at the base of the La Meridiana hill, a flight of stairs from the main studios. Participants should have a basic experience of working with clay and a basic knowledge of fundamental concepts in ceramics.
