Introduction
Throwing Marathon – back to the starting line again!
There have been many successful editions of this classical course and it is still in great demand. This workshop consists of a five intensive days on the wheel, with tons of clay available.
Techniques
Starting with a revision of the basics, the Throwing Marathon continues with demonstrations on the wheel of different forms, including bowls, cups, plates, vases and pitchers. Then, techniques for completing some of the work like trimming, pulling handles, addition of feet, will be shown. On the wheel we’ll be pulling and pushing, altering forms, cutting and adding clay. Round pots, oval pots, square pots, handles, spouts, lids, wings and horns!
Teaching method
Teaching is based on demonstrations and much individual attention. Throughout the well structured programme, each session will provide new inputs and stimulus. Students will have plenty of time to practise all techniques shown and find inspiration in the on site ceramic gallery that shows a wide range of ceramic pots and vases.The Throwing Marathon does not include any firing but focusses totally on the making. It opens up a perspective of worryfree training and experimenting and is a great opportunity for real progress. Video clips for individual repetition of all techniques shown will be available to all students.
Logistics
On every class day, a delicious meal will be served. At booking, you may select your preferred room type, choosing between standard lodging, single room and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that depending on the availability, certain types at times may not be offered.
The Artist
Halfway through his undergraduate literature degree, Hamish realized he wanted to become a potter. He started out at Winchcombe Pottery in England, then completed a four-year apprenticeship with Mark Hewitt in North Carolina, followed by an MFA from Utah State University. He works as a studio potter and has exhibited widely, including in Europe, Japan, Thailand, and New Zealand. Hamish focuses on using local materials in his work. He seeks to make pots that people love to use and connect them to the landscapes where his materials come from. He is also a tea enthusiast.

The costs listed include both the workshop fee and the lodging:
15 MINUTES WALK FROM THE STUDIO
Standard accommodation in shared double room with shared bathroom. Final course cost Euro 1860
Standard accommodation in single room with shared bathroom. Final course cost Euro 2030
PRIVATE APARTMENT
Maximum 15 minutes walk from the studio, with one bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and outside space. Final course fee: Euro 2350

Additional information
The workshop fee includes the following:
Tuition of 6 – 8 hours per day;
Studio open 11 hours per day;
All materials;
Freshly prepared three course lunch with wine on all working days;
Welcome breakfast, Welcome and Final dinner;
Coffee break in the mornings and in the evenings.
Payment and Refund Policy
A deposit is required at registration. After submitting the registration form, you may proceed with the payment on-line. If you choose to pay by bank transfer, the registration will be confirmed once the deposit has been accredited in our banking account. The balance must be paid at the beginning of the course.
Cancellations
You may withdraw within 14 days of registration without incurring in any penalties and will have the deposit fully refunded. No refund of deposits past 14 days of registration, pursuant to articles 53 and following of the Italian consumer legislation, in accordance with the EU consumer protection legislation. In the event of disputes, the competent court is Florence. If the workshop cannot be hold because of an insufficient number of students, the deposit will be fully reimbursed.
Force Majeure
Students must know that cancellations may occur due to events beyond our control (e.g. pandemic, civil disorder, medical or family issues of the instructor). In such case, La Meridiana reserves the right to offer a voucher for a different workshop of your choice. The voucher is valid for two years. The deposit will be transferred to the workshop of choice.
Artist Statement
I put a great deal of time, energy and love into each pot I make. My goal is to make comfortable pots that people use every day.
I strive to connect my pots to the place they come from. The materials I use are key. I forage for clay and glaze materials in my local area and process them. This is time-intensive and involves lots of testing. It is a labour of love.
I choose to wood and soda-fire my pots. These processes are slow and sometimes arduous, but they give the pots so much variation and life. Aside from the wonderful surfaces that can result, I also love the communal aspect of wood-firing.
