A contemporary interpretation of an ancient technique

Handbuilding or throwing and Raku firing. For all

36A-2024 – Rosana Antonelli – Terra sig, Soft Raku and Texture

Introduction

Among the most beautiful and unusual ceramic surfaces, the fascination for Terra sig never fails. Terra sig ( from Terra sigillata = sealed earth) is an antique technique reaching back to the Romans, used to seal low fired vases. It produces a semi matt finish with an array of earthy tones and a soft feel. In this course, Rosana Antonelli will teach Terra sig in a contemporary interpretation.

Techniques taught

We will start the five days of the workshop by making vases or flat objects with slabs or on the wheel. Then we will study the theoretical and practical knowledge for the preparation and application of Terra sig and various finishing methods.  Variation of the surface effects and interesting texture will be obtained by moistening the surface, by work with sponges and brushes and by using resist techniques.

Firings

The last two days will be dedicated to the firings. Here we will learn how to obtain deep blacks and beautiful craquelé through the technique of Soft Raku, a way to enhance further the beauty of the Terra sig finishing. Each time a transformation will take place during the firing, just before our eyes, enchanting the students.

Logistics

Students will study in the beautiful environment of La Meridiana, hosted in nearby accommodation and a full meal will be served on all course days.
