40-2022 – Susan Nemeth – Inlaid Coloured Porcelain for Intermediate and Advanced

Introduction

In the course  Inlaid Coloured Porcelain for Intermediate and Advanced we will explore in detail how to control line, blocks of colour, and half tones. Using various techniques of working with layers of coloured slips and porcelains you will learn to create subtle pattern and imagery.

Techniques taught

In Inlaid Coloured Porcelain for Intermediate and Advanced Susan Nemeth teaches a unique method of decoration. Firstly, laminated sheets of coloured clays, inlaid with pattern or imagery will be lightly beaten, rolled and stretched, then formed into shape. Working from your own images, we will find the best ways to adapt ideas for porcelain collages. The inlaid coloured porcelain slabs will be used to create bowls, vases and/or wall plaques formed by press moulding or with slab-building methods. Buried in sand to prevent warping, the work will be high fired to cone 10, to create a smooth, satin like, matt and vitrified surface.

Teaching method

In this class students will learn how to make and use many layers of clays and slips; and how to control the distortion of the pattern, which actually becomes a tool for beautiful effects. The taught techniques will include cutting or rubbing through the layers to reveal the hidden colours. We will learn how the use of coloured slips beneath the inlays can form both, very fine and bold outlines and furthermore, how rubbing around these areas creates subtle grades of colour. We will work with half-tone effects and shading with coloured slips and additionally emphasise revealing the decorative edge strata.

Logistics

The course is open to those who have participated in one of Susan Nemeth’s Nerikomi courses or are familiar with the basics of the technique. On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. Lodging is included as well. The workshop is suitable for all levels.
