25-2022 – Simon Levin – A Lot of Fire

Introduction

Ever want to understand a wood kiln?  Repetition is key and A Lot of Fire makes this class innovative. Simon Levin is back to La Meridiana for the thrird time and during the two weeks of his class we will load and fire the La Meridiana Train kiln twice

Tecniques

A Lot of Fire covers loading and firing techniques, as well as kiln design, developing clay bodies and making a firing schedule based on aesthetic preferences. Some attention will be given to making techniques as we make work to fill each kiln load, but this is essentially a kiln class, where we learn by doing.

Method

Woodfiring workshops are essentially very collaborative and this workshop is no exception. Through work and direct experience, students will learn and leave the two week course moe confident and capable to approach a wood firing independently.

Logistics

A full meal will be served on every class day. Lodging is included int he cost.

The artist

Simon Levin: “In 1993 I fell in love with the movement of flame through a wood-kiln. Its sensuous quality is something I seek to capture in my work with soft forms, full curves and flame paths etched into the surface. This quest led me to an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. I now own Mill Creek Pottery in Wisconsin, where my apprentices and I work to advance the cause of wood-fired pottery. In 2013 I was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Taiwan exploring the potential of local materials. Recently I have been a visiting artist, lecturer and kiln builder at The China Academy of the Arts in Hangzhou. There my apprentices and I have been bringing a technology that originated in Asia and has evolved in the incubator of the United States back to Asia. Clay is central to my life.” www.simonlevin.com
