28A-2026 – Shanna Fliegel – The Poetic Picture

Introduction

The Poetic Picture will offer you the opportunity to explore your poetic voice and narratively express your individual story through clay. Discover the power of imagery through introspective writing prompts, drawing exercises and pattern/texture research that translate to mark-making and printing on clay. Emphasis will be on generating imagery, while constructing a variety of clay canvas structures, ready to hang or display.

Techniques

Shanna will demonstrate how to layer ceramic surfaces through thermofaxing, image transfers, underglaze application, sgraffito, mishima, textures, and wax resist. Guidance regarding composition and color theory will be offered through a variety of glazing techniques. Participants will have access to a thermal imager, a machine that generates quick and easy, customizable screen prints of personal drawings and copyright free found images and creat their own poetic picture.

Teaching Method

Daily demonstrations will include building ceramic forms which lend themselves well to surface embellishment including press molded tiles, textured tablets, slab built platters, coil built textured vessels and wheel thrown pottery. We will learn how to make a simple plaster texture slab, unique to your tool box. A firing will conclude the workshop and allow for time to share results. Cold surface demos will include applying acrylic paints, watercolor and wire to finalize and unify designs with successful hanging display systems.

Logistics

A full meal and two coffee breaks are served on each class day. A half day excursion to a Tuscan beauty spot or art city is included in the programme.

At booking, you may select your preferred room type, choosing between standard lodging, single room and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that depending on the availability, certain types at times may not be offered.
