40A-2024 – Maria Geszler-Garzuly – Screenprint on Clay

Introduction

Screenprint on Clay will first teach you to make your own screens, starting from your photographs or drawings. Then you wil learn to transfer the images on clay slabs, with which create three dimensional objects.

Techniques

First step we will choose aproprate images to make our own silk screens. We will learn how to produce the matrix for screen-printing in the dark room and the finished screens will  be part of the outcome of the workshop which each student will take home. Second step, we will learn how to approach screenprint on clay slabs. The printed slabs will hold our images and out of these we will build sculptural objects. We will use stoneware, porcelain and colored engobes, and the work will be fired at 1150 ° C.

Instruction

Maria’s poetic approach, her sense of humor and her extensive experience make each of her workshops an unforgettable experience

Logistics

On every class day of Screenprint on Clay, a delicious meal will be served. Lodging is included as well. Last kiln opening will be on Saturday morning, please plan your travels accodingly, without having to leave the school before 9:30 am.

 The Artist

“Maria Geszler-Garzuly completed her studies at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Budapest in 1965. She worked as an industrial designer between 1966 and 1980, setting up her own studio in 1975. Her work is award-winning and can be found in museums and collections around the world. Her competent teaching style is appreciated by the students of workshops, seminars and simposiumns around the world.
She says about her inspiration: “We are part of the wonderful or threatening nature that surrounds us – this philosophy of Rousseau has inspired me for decades in the creation of works of art. It is my way of looking at the landscape when I take photographs, the way I touch clay and porcelain when I take it in my hand. This is how I perceive wet clay and my silkscreen images when I organically create the curves and sculptures to decorate. It is the desire that leads to hills, endless meadows, waters and beaches, to then dissolve and get lost in “nothing”, “infinite”.

Who didn’t feel something like this? Wandering at the banks of rivers, standing on the sandy shores of the seas, at the foot of the mountains, looking at the peaks? Who dindn’t feel the attraction of the unknown? To go far as possible, to see the orizon, to discver the mountain peaks, to reach the skies.
