Elegant bowls with lofty design

Slipcasting. For all

35A-2023- Sara Kirschen – Slipcasting with porcelain

Introduction

Slipcasting with porcelain is a surprisingly simple and effective technique. It has not yet gained the attention it deserves, considering the very fine and sophisticated objects that can be obtained with this method.

The technique

Participants will learn slipcasting with porcelain. They will be encouraged to use it in an artistic way to create bowls, vases and tiles. Different molds will be the base for making bowls, vases and containers on which to experiment various methods of decoration.
A part of the course will be dedicated to overlapping different colors and delicately engrave the objects. This way, once fired, the colors will be revealed in transparency. Furthermore, using sliptransfer, students will be able to create pictorial and material surface effects.
After the first firing, the objects will be carefully sanded, in order to obtain a clean and very smooth surface. Some will be glazed inside with transparent crystalline glaze and fired to high temperature, leaving the outside unglazed. These techniques are accessible for all.

Logistics

Students will study in the beautiful environment of La Meridiana, hosted in nearby accommodation and a full meal will be served on all course days. Please note that the last kiln opening will be in the morning of Saturday, therefore plan your travels so to not leave La Meridiana before 9.30 am.
