The fascination of lightness and transparency

Handbuilding. For all

30A-2022 Sara Kirschen – Paperclay with Porcelain

Introduction

The appeal of paperclay with porcelain derives from its excellent properties. By inserting fibre into the ceramic mixture, it becomes very workable and therefore lends itself to a wide variety of approaches. Paperclay with porcelain, as used in this course, enhances the transparency of the porcelain further and allows for the making of very thin objects and extravagant shapes, almost impossible to achieve with other materials.

Techniques

During the five full working days of the workshop, a variety of paperclay techniques will be addressed: Liquid paperclay  applied in various ways, paperclay with porcelain worked at the plastic state, use of slabs, at the plastic and dry state. To create shapes,  we may use molds and cardboard supports. Furthermore, coloured paperclay will allow for beautiful effects. The techniques lend itself for the making of decorative  objects  including jewellery.

Instruction

Guided by the instructor, everyone will be able to express their creativity making light and sophisticated objects  At the end of the course, everyone will have a rather broad knowledge of the techniques and potential of paperclay with porcelain. Some pieces will be bisqued and glaze fired, others once fired to high temperature. The course is open to all levels of knowledge. Beginners may approach this material successfully, whereas the more experienced will find stimuli through the unusual possibilities the material offers.

Logistica.

The course lasts five full working days and at every lunch, a delicious meal is served. The last kiln opening will be in the morning of Saturday, plan your travels so to not leave La Meridiana before 9.30 am.
