The fascination of lightness and transparency

Handbuilding. For all

32A-2026 – Sara Kirschen – Coloured Paperclay

Introduction

The appeal of paperclay with porcelain derives from its excellent properties. By inserting fibre into the ceramic mixture, it becomes very workable and therefore lends itself to a wide variety of approaches. Normally, the techniques used with coloured porcelain are complicated because of very delicate stages, such as drying, during which it is easy to have cracks or detachments between the various colours. It is thanks to the inclusion of paper that we can avoid this problem and make objects more easily and quickly. On one hand, paperclay with coloured porcelain allows for the making of very thin objects and extravagant shapes, on the other hand, we can achieve brilliant colours and striking decoration.

Techniques

During the five full working days of the workshop, a variety of coloured paperclay techniques will be addressed: Liquid paperclay applied in various ways, paperclay with porcelain worked at the plastic state, use of slabs, at the plastic and dry state. In order to create shapes, we may use cardboard supports and plaster molds. In addition, part of the programme will focus on colour theory, so that students will be able to develop their own colours, and thus have a complete understanding of the entire process.

Instruction

Guided by the instructor, everyone will be able to express their creativity making colourful, light and sophisticated objects.  At the end of the course, everyone will have a rather broad knowledge of the technique and potential of coloured paperclay with porcelain. Some pieces will be bisqued and glaze fired, others once fired to high temperature. Being the course open to all levels of knowledge, beginners may approach this material successfully, whereas the more experienced will find stimuli through the unusual possibilities the material offers.

Logistics

The course lasts five full working days and at every lunch, a delicious meal is served. At booking, you may select your preferred room type, choosing between standard lodging, single room and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that depending on the availability, certain types at times may not be offered.

Last kiln opening will be in the morning of Saturday, plan your travels so to not leave La Meridiana before 9.30 am.
