19A-2026 – Sandy Lockwood – The Rising Curve
May 3 – 30 2026
Advancing to the next level
Throwing, glazing, woodfiring. Intermediate
Introduction
The aim of The Rising Curve is to develop a personal program that can be achieved in the month-long time frame. The focus of this course will be both on the making skills and on the aesthetic insight, under the guidance of the tutor, Sandy Lockwood.
Teaching method
Sandy Lockwood will act as a teacher and mentor, taking a supportive coaching approach to each student’s development. Sandy will work with each student to expand their skills and develop new ideas in order to bring forth their personal voice. A nurturing atmosphere and peer learning will also be an important part of the experience. The community will be formed by students who may or may not know each other, but who can build on the shared experience of having attended On Centre Courses.
Techniques
In The Rising Curve the participants can deepen their knowledge in many directions. There will be an opportunity for growth, whether it be techniques for throwing and altering forms, or working on a particular shape or set of forms. Glaze-development can also be part of the personal project. For those interested, there will be a chance to fire their work in the wood kiln. Alternatively, gas kiln firing will be available. A playful approach to making will be encouraged in order to venture into new territories.
Logistics
This one-month intensive course is open to advanced students only. The group will be limited to nine participants.Participants must either have participated a previous On-Centre edition, or must show sufficient experience by sending an application.
On every class day, a delicious meal will be served. At the time of booking you can select your preferred room type, from standard, single and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that some room types may not be available at certain times depending on availability.
