Throwing, reduction firing. For all

“The craft of the potters wheel is bound in technique which, in a similar way to mastery of a musical instrument, needs analysis and dedicated practice to reach a professional standard. My throwing courses are immersive and intensive, participants will receive a thorough review of their existing skills and will be encouraged to stretch and challenge themselves to improve the technical and aesthetic quality, and scale of their pots.

Techniques taught

Learn how to make taller, wider vessels, and how alter and assemble composite thrown forms. Whether making modest domestic ware or more ambitious individual pieces, we will examine the relationship between line, form and surface, and the qualities of detail which allow stoneware glazes to break over rims, handles and texture so well in a reduction firing, features which ultimately evolve into the hallmarks of a personal style.

Teaching method

Come to work hard and make better pots.” Students will each choose a selection of their best pots to continue through the firing and glazing process.

The Artist

Richard Phethean
For forty years, alongside the development of my own work as an artist potter, I have taught throwing to individuals and groups at colleges and in my own studio. I am author of two books; The Complete Potter – Throwing, University of Pennsylvania Press/Batsford 1991 and The New Ceramics – Throwing, American Ceramic Arts Society/Bloomsbury 2012. Originally trained as a reduction stoneware maker, I developed a personal style using terracotta and slips in a contemporary way. This will be welcome return to my roots and an opportunity to apply some of my lifetimes experience marrying form and surface to high temperature and textural glazes”.
