Print techniques on Clay will focus on methods that can be applied easily, and with simple materials. In fact,we will explore a variety of printing techniques in a different perspective. When hearing the word of ‘printing’ it is common to think of screen-print or transferring with decals, but it is more than that…
Techniques taught
You will get the taste of some photography quality transfers with Laser Printing, for which you can use your own. preferred images. You will also be able to paint or draw with slip on different materials, to get the Monoprint experience in a unique painterly way. Lastly, Lithography (Photocopy) printing will give you the feeling of some artistic touches on your forms. These print techniques on clay allow to use transfers in any possible direction, in short, to express yourself with clay, color and images in a unique way.
How to use the techniques
We will not only focus on image transfers but in addition will turn the printed slabs into forms that you have in mind. Printing methods will allow to create complex and compelling surfaces, useful for both, storytelling and decoration. These techniques are applicable for sculptural and functional work and are appropriate for all types of clays and temperature.
Studio space and logistics
The workshop will be taught in the Nature Studio in the gardens of La Meridiana, to be reached climbing a set of steps. On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. Lodging is included as well. The workshop is suitable for non beginners.
The last kiln opening will be in the morning of Saturday, therefore plan your travels so to not leave La Meridiana before 9.30 am.
The artist
Leman Kalay was born in Izmir/Turkey in 1981. She graduated from Izmir Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Traditional Turkish Ceramics and Restoration of Ceramics, in 2006. Later she received her MFA from the Department of Ceramic and Glass after completing her thesis titled “Printing Techniques that Can Be Used on Ceramic Surfaces” in 2009. Since 2008 she is sharing her experiences about the printing techniques all around the world. She received her PhD after completing her thesis, titled “Minimalist Instillations in Ceramic Art” in 2013 March.http://lemankalay.blogspot.com
