January 3 – March 27 2021
A residential twelve week course for an in depth training on functional ceramic. Application for the 2021 edition will open May 1 2020. Please write to email@example.com for further information
On Centre is aimed at committed people who wish to develop in-depth skills for a professional approach to clay. It provides rigorous development of throwing skills and visual awareness through focused training and instruction about material and processes.
The primary aim of the course is to help participants achieve confidence and fluency, which comes from the ability to efficiently throw items in quantity. The participants will explore the possibilities and limitations of high fire materials, so that they can be selected, adapted and used with competence.
Continuous training, working in a small group of eight participants and one-on-one attention from the instructors allow consistent progress at an individual pace. The sharing of information, opinion and discovery within the group contributes to this further and will be encouraged in regular group discussions.
Students have a generous working space at their disposal. They will stay and study in the supportive environment of La Meridiana, with logistics like lodging, transportation and lunch taken care of.
Two foremost ceramicists of wide experience will tutor the selected group of eight students.
“For forty years, alongside the development of my own work as an artist potter, I have taught throwing to individuals and groups at colleges and in my own studio. I am author of two books; The Complete Potter – Throwing, University of Pennsylvania Press/Batsford 1991 and The New Ceramics – Throwing, American Ceramic Arts Society/Bloomsbury 2012. Originally trained as a reduction stoneware maker, I developed a personal style using terracotta and slips in a contemporary way. This will be welcome return to my roots and an opportunity to apply some of my lifetimes experience marrying form and surface to high temperature and textural glazes”. www.richardphethean.co.uk
Franco Rampi started working as a potter in 1981. After an apprenticeship in England and a cycle of studies in Italy, he went on to open his own studio in Tuscany. With his roots and training in wheel thrown production pottery, Franco’s personal works are individual in their form and idea, experimenting with unusual processes and combinations of clays and slips. He has been one of La Meridiana’s most treasured collaborators over the last decade.
