4A-2027 – Meike Schröppe – On The Wheel. Winter
January 24 – February 20 2027
One month on the wheel plus glazing.
For all levels
On the Wheel. Winter is an intensive course to develop your throwing and finishing technique. One month of focused studio time with daily demos, exercises, and personalised feedback offers real opportunity for progress. Working in a small group of maximum eight students ensures that everyone receives plenty of individual attention.
Techniques taught
On the Wheel. Winter guides participants through a well-planned program of throwing and glazing exercises. We will work with a stoneware clay to make pottery forms both for functional and decorative uses. Throughout the course, the instructor will demonstrate various forms including, but not limited to bowls, cups, plates, vases, teapots, pitchers and lidded vessels. We will discuss and practice the timing and methods for altering, trimming, adding spots or handles. Later on, demonstrations to modify and decorate the thrown shapes will also start. These include fluting, faceting, carving, slip decoration, and different glazing methods to create texture and finish. By repetition and prototype development students will quickly see the wide range of possibilities in shapes and surfaces.
Teaching method
The instructor, Meike Schröppe, will hold daily group demonstrations and provides plenty of individual attention. A programme of technical and visual talks complements the demonstrations and practical work. Students will receive handouts summarizing technical information on clay, materials and glazes. Throughout the course, the instructor also guides students in aesthetic choices while developing their techniques. Due to the small size of the group, there will be plenty of interaction and stimulating discussion. Students can also draw inspiration from the on-site ceramic gallery’s wide display of forms and styles.
