An introduction to inlaid porcelain

Introduction
In Nerikomi technique, the clay itself is colored, therefore the decoration is integral to the objects. Because colors in porcelain are very bright, the final result will be vibrant and lively.
Technique
We start by mixing the color pigments into the porcelain clay, to get familiar with the material. We will make different shades of one color, gradations from one hue to another and new colors by mixing two different colors. Each student creates his or her own color palette. We then stack the colored clay into a block and slicing through the cross section will reveal the design. Students will build these blocks according to their own vision. Combining slices from these blocks and placing them together in a pattern or rhythm, we end up with a bigger slab, with which we can build an object.
Teaching method
All techniques are demonstrated step by step, then everyone gets to work with what they have learned. The course is suitable for all levels but you should have already worked with clay. A lot of attention is paid to individual guidance and Maria will strive for every student to be able to take a small fired object, to take home, along with plenty of ideas and insight into the fine details of the Nerikomi technique.
Logistics
On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. At booking, you may select your preferred room type, choosing between standard lodging, single room and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that depending on the availability, certain types at times may not be offered.
The Artist
Maria ten Kortenaar is from Amsterdam, Netherlands. She trained as a goldsmith at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Because of her great desire for color she started to use inlaid porcelain since 2005 and has made this way of working her own. Her work has won prizes internationally: At the International Ceramics Biennale in Korea, in Jingdezhen in China, in Mino in Japan, in Roseville in California and is shown in solo exhibitions worldwide. Also, Museums in the Netherlands, Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan have included her work in their collections.

The costs listed include both: the workshop fee and the lodging.
Standard accommodation in shared double room, at 15 minutes walking distance from La Meridiana – Final course cost: Euro 2120
Standard accommodation in single room, at 15 minutes walking distance from La Meridiana – Final course cost: Euro 2300
Upgraded accommodation in sigle room with ensuite bath at 3 minutes walking distance from La Meridiana. Final course cost: Euro 2480
Course without lodging Euro 1900
Payment and Refund Policy
A deposit is required at registration. After submitting the registration form, you may proceed with the payment on-line. If you choose to pay by bank transfer, the registration will be confirmed once the deposit has been accredited in our banking account. The balance must be paid at the beginning of the course.
Cancellations
You may withdraw within 14 days of registration without incurring in any penalties and will have the deposit fully refunded. No refund of deposits past 14 days of registration, pursuant to articles 53 and following of the EU consumer protection legislation.
If La Meridiana cannot hold the course due to unforeseen events beyond our control, La Meridiana reserves the right to offer a voucher for a different course of your choice. The voucher is valid for two years. The deposit will be transferred to the new course.

The workshop fee includes the following:
Tuition of 6 – 8 hours per day;
Studio open 11 hours per day;
All materials and firings;
Freshly prepared three course lunch with wine on all working days;
Welcome breakfast, Welcome and Final dinner;
Coffee break in the mornings and in the evenings.
