45-2022 Luigi Pullini – Community Woodfiring
October 29 – November 4 2022
Woodfiring in the trainkiln
Some experience is desirable
Community Firing will take place in one of La Meridiana’s wood firing kilns. It is the Orientexpress, so called to honor its origin coming from the Far East. The trainkiln is designed to enhance the effects of fire and ashes; conceived in the wake of the tradition of the Japanese “Anagama” kilns. Without glazing, highly texturized surfaces are obtained, which express a contemporary aesthetic sense.
In Community Firing, potters are invited to embark on a one-week trip, bringing their own bisques pieces in stoneware or porcelain. Together we will share a wood firing experience from start to finish. Starting by discussing the setting of the kiln, and the various factors that may influence the results, we then will review the importance of woading and supports. During loading, we will pay specific attention to the placing of the pots and preview an estimate of the flame path and ashes. The community firing will last 40 hours. In a collective effort, we will alternate shifts in small teams.
Each participant is invited to bring objects of various sizes, which can be placed in a total volume of 45x45x45. The pieces must be made in stoneware clay or porcelain, suitable for firing to cone 10. Further information will be given at the time of registration.
During cooling we will take an field trip to the surrounding area. With grilled food and good wine we will celebrate firing and our collaboration. Accommodation and nine meals and coffee breaks are included in the cost.
