09A-2025 Luigi Pullini – Clay Foraging

February 23 – March 8 2025

Research, preparation and transformation of found materials

Some experience is desirable

Teiera cotta a fuoco vivo

Introduction

Ninety percent of the earth’s crust is made of materials useful for the potter. This fascinating fact underlies Clay Foraging, a workshop on the topic of foraging clay and glaze materials. The course is completed by making and firing in the train kiln.

Structure

This course has been developed to respond to the demand of an all-encompassing study for the research, testing and transformation of materials on a proficient and organized level. Furthermore, it will give participants the necessary confidence and information  to continue the practice of foraging independently when back home.

Method

Intensive investigation and study of theoretical aspects alongside the practical making is part all along the two weeks. Under the expert guidance of Luigi Pullini, students will experience the complete method of wild clay foraging:  studying the environment and observing nature, the research and testing of materials for clay bodies and glazes and finally making pots.  The experience will come to conclusion with a wood firing the train kiln.

In the studio

In the studio, we will have three to four full days for working either on the wheel or with handbuilding in order to make pieces to be once-fired in the train kiln. There will be demonstrations on making, altering and raw glazing. By appliyng these methods, each participant will create objects suitable for the wood firing.

The firing

The fringe is the gran finale of the course.  Experimentation will be core, in order to get as much information from the firing as possible. Instruction and discussion will regard loading, type of wood and their properties, the rule of ashes, the importance of type of clay and the firing cycle.  Firing will occur in the “Orient Express”, La Meridiana’s train kiln, which is conceived in the wake of the Japanese “Anagama” kilns that enhance the effects of flames and ashes on the clay surface. As has been done for centuries, we will do a single firing of the raw clay and raw glazed pots.

Logistics

On every classday, a delicious meal .will be served and twice daily coffee breaks are included. At booking you may select your preferred room type, choosing between standard lodging, single room and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that depending on the availability, certain types at times may not be offered.

  2. Recognise and classify the materials found through several steps. Perform adequate tests to reveal the physical qualities and aesthetic possibilities of the materials.
  3. Learn to make with the unique, not standardized qualities of your materials.
  4. Gain understanding of the many aspects involved with wood firing in the train kiln.
