29A-2023 – Karima Duchamp – Sign and Colour

July 16 – 22 2023

Using high temperature engobes in a painterly way

For the intermediate level

29A-2023 – Karima Duchamp – Sign and Colour

Introduction

In Sign and Colour, we will approach the use of colour in a playful way.  Allowing time to build, experiment, contemplate and reflect together, we will learn to make and use vitreous engobes, exploring and developing personal ideas for decorating techniques.

Techniques taught

First, participants will make three simple forms with slab building technique: a cylinder vase, a square vase and a bowl. After that, decorating techniques will be taught and applied on tiles, so to fully understand them.  This will include technical and practical aspects:  how to make gradient colors to be used as a background, how to use masking tape and paper stamps. Each participant will be able to develop his own palette of engobes. These practices will enrich the decoration and let emerge motifs, patterns and stories.  On a different side, sketching, painting, and drawing will help participants to release and open-up their gestures. The final pieces will be fired to 1260° .

Aims of the course

Sign and Colour is open to students wishing to discover colored high temperatures engobes to be applied in a painterly way. Through the instructors’ guidance, students will develop their creative work with an inspiration board set up to develop their personal ideas of decoration and own palette of colours. Some experience with clay is desirable but the course is open also to painters.

Teaching method

Karima will teach her unique technique of decorating with layering of colored engobes. She will lead the students through voice and technical guidance and let them experiment with the engobes. She will pay particular attention in following the students both collectively, through interaction between the participants, and individually, by pointing out artistic references as the work develops. Slowing down the process will be a further method to find personal touches and a kind of personal voice. Karima will show a presentation of her works, explaining her transition from painting to painting on ceramics in addition to some artist videos and websites references to find inspiration in other artistic practices.

Logistics

Students will study in the beautiful environment of La Meridiana, hosted in nearby accommodation and a full meal will be served on all course days. The last kiln opening will be in the morning of Saturday, plan your travels so to not leave La Meridiana before 9.30 am.
