34-2026 – Juz Kitson – Into a Ceramic World of Wonder
August 16 – 29 2026
New Ways of Creating Avant-Garde Works with An Age Old Material
Beginners to advanced, with knowledge of handbuilding techniques
Introduction
Join Juz Kitson on an Experimental Clay Workshop, working primarily with porcelain to create wondrous, eclectic, challenging, and thought-provoking objecs. Participants will be encouraged to be bold, courageous and explorative through their art making, to challenge the traditional notions of a material steeped in history.
Techniques
Juz Kitson is generous with sharing her coveted techniques she has spent over a decade creating and mastering. She will demonstrate to the workshop participants through group presentations and one-on-one tutorials, encouraging participants to create through imitation or be inspired to develop new ways. There will be group and partnered collaborations to create an outdoor ephemeral site specific installation at La Meridiana, and refining and finishing individual objects and sculptures for a high temperature firing.
An excursion to Florence and to “La Specola” the Museum of Natural History will allow to gain insight and reference points for the body of work.Combining found materials to the fired ceramic works and developing ways of installing both in commercial galleries and in museum settings will also be addressed.
Teaching Method
Juz creates an inspiring and nurturing studio atmosphere for participants. Encouraging everyone to push their boundaries and play along the way, developing interesting concepts and refining ideas, creating innovative works are part of her creative teaching process. Juz believes in the process of creative evolution rather than creating masterful finished objects. Her teaching method is testament to this.
Logistics
A full meal and two coffee breaks are served on each class day. The fieldtrip to Florence with guided museum visit is included in the programme.
Application
Due to very popular demand and a limited number of spaces in the workshop, Juz has requested information from each interested participant to help in the selection process to form the workshop group.
In order to attend, application is required. For further detail on the application procedure read the dedicated section below.

The artist
Juz Kitson’s ceramic works are resplendent and dense, complex and large scale. Kitson has mastered the use of porcelain and other clay bodies through intricate hand-building and slip casting.
Central to Juz’ work is the concept of ritual and transformation. Her experiences of living and travelling across the world, walking through the dense jungles of Indonesia and living in the Ancient porcelain city of Jingdezhen are infused within her work. Kitson’s contemporary practice has a flair for the occult; drawing on her observations of shamans and forgotten temples. There is a deep seated and persistent questioning around the nature of the self, the role of the unconscious and the experience of changing states as we might experience in a dream or a trance.
Juz’ work continues to gain critical acclaim since her debut in Primavera at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in 2012. Kitson has exhibited extensively both nationally across Australia and internationally with solo shows in Brisbane, London, Tokyo and Beijing and her work can be seen in many public collections and museums across Australia.
