39 – 2025 – Justin Donofrio – Clay & Chroma

Dive into the world of color theory in the two-week workshop Clay & Chroma. In this workshop, you will use colored clay to make ceramic forms and expand your understanding of form and surface. On inspirational field trips, you will research the nuances of color offered by the Italian landscape and cultural centers to bring back to your work in the studio. Scheduled for the fall season, you’ll be immersed in vibrant hues and exceptional light quality that will you on a colorful journey of artistic exploration.

Techniques taught

Justin Donofrio will guide you to integrate color exploration into your existing knowledge of clay techniques, whether you are familiar with thrown forms, coiled, or handbuilt methods as well as incorporating the use of hump molds and templates.
First, students will use a series of testing techniques to dive into color theory and explore how different pigments and clay bodies interact and complement one another.  Next, each participant will be invited to create a series of objects from a collectively cultivated palette, which is the result of the collaborative color research carried out throughout the workshop.

Teaching method

Clay & Chroma focuses on an in-depth exploration of colored clay, enabling participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of how various pigments and clay bodies interact and relate to one another. During field trips, students will observe our surroundings, appreciating the interplay of color and light. Developing a heightened sense of color awareness during these excursions will open new avenues for expanding your integration of form and surface. The workshop offers a unique combination of practical learning and artistic inspiration, providing the ideal opportunity to unite color theory with your passion for ceramics in the timeless setting of Italy.

On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. At booking, you may select your preferred room type, choosing between standard lodging, single room and/or upgraded accommodation. Please note that depending on the availability, certain types at times may not be offered.
