Experiment and joy in a course that stimulates freedom of expression.
Handbuilding. For all
In this course we will work with low temperature clays, stains and colored clays. The partial use of glaze allows for great versatility in the designing of the objects. Our guideline will be the double face, meaning that we will strive to conceive objects that have a double function, such as a bowl that may have a different live as a decorative panel.
We will be handbuilding, using plaster molds and stencils. Those interested and already capable in throwing may use the potter’s wheel. Stains will be incorporated into the clay bodies; the clay will be stretched and twisted and furthermore, inlay may be applied. In other words, our aim will be the creation of personal, expressive slabs, for the creation of objects that are multi-functional.
Isabella Fazzo’ s demos on her unique coloring and construction techniques will be complemented by reflections on form and functionality and on how these concepts can interact freely, without a pre-established approach. As a result, each student will be stimulated to study multifunctional forms, creating an active and participatory relationship with objects. Willingness to experiment is most appreciated. Multi-functional forms can be:
- Trays or bowls that become an installation or panel to hang on a wall.
- Reversed bowls or cups that become candle holders.
- A panel with flexible components that may be turned into placemats.
- Pillows that become containers.
Isabella Fazzo was born in Milan. She studied art, specializing in ceramics at the Royal Forest of Dean College in Gloucestershire, England. In Italy, she attended courses at La Meridiana and studied under the guidance of the founder Pietro Elia Maddalena, In 2008, she obtained a Master of Arts in Ceramics from U.W.I.C. Cardiff Metropolitan University. She lives in Florence where she works and teaches, collaborating with various institutions. She says of herself: “I move in many different fields of creativity and teach in these fields with joy, passion and astonishment. Life has brought unexpected as well as surprising experiences and perhaps most importantly, has led to look at it always with fresh sight. ” http://www.isabellafazzo.com
