19-2023 – Eddie Curtis – Textures in the Landscape
May 7 – 20 2023
Composite forms
Handbuilding, throwing and surface techniques. Intermediate

Introduction
Textures in the Landscape is a course that enables the student to understand and utilise the processes and techniques required to make convincing landscape based vessels or sculptures.
Teaching method
Aimed at an intermediate or advanced level student, this course is designed to enable you make a fresh connection with clay. There will be an emphasis on the employment of variously achieved textures including the use of unique texture pastes developed by myself. As well as being a ‘hand builder’ for many years I have also had extensive throwing experience which I am able to share with students.
Since I first began my journey into creating textured forms in 2010 I have continued to develop and progress my techniques and I would like to share that knowldege with you. My approach is experimental and observational and together we shall work with techniques that will inspire a way of working that helps you to create vessels, containers and/or sculptures with a singular identity of their own.
Techniques
My work incorporates and celebrates references to landscape in it’s broadest sense, utilising many techniques to build a composite and textured form. I shall demonstrate how some basic, simple techniques can be combined to give rise to apparently complex forms that completely belie their elementary beginnings. My intention is to elicit a response from my students that begins with ‘I want to do that’ and develops into a confidencee to achieve that which they aspire to. By the end of the course you will have discovered the process of combining multiple techniques in a way that opens and enables your approach to making personal and uniquely inspired works.
Logistics
Course level is aimed at intermediate/advanced clay working. Throwing proficiency not essential. On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. Lodging is included as well.
