41-2023 – Craig Underhill – Expressive Techniques

October 8 – 14 2023

Mark making and slab building

Handbuilding. For all

Ingobbie e tecniche espressive. Engobes, Slab buildingExpressive Techniques with Craig Underhill.

Techniques

The workshop begins by introducing and practicing expressive techniques that can be used to produce a variety of marks and textures on a clay surface. This includes using engobe, slip, impressing, grog and sand, monoprint and stenciling. These mark making techniques will then be employed when making slab built vessel forms where students will be encouraged to cut, reassemble and rejoin in order to produce more complex finished pieces. There will be an opportunity to work on a larger scale if students want to do this, keeping however in mind the kiln space available.

Teaching method

Techniques will be carefully demonstrated before students practice them with the focus on being experimental and open to new discoveries. Craig will demonstrate how he uses sketchbooks as part of his practice and make a presentation about his background, ideas and sources of inspiration.

Logistics

On every classday, a delicious meal will be served. Lodging is included as well. The workshop is suitable for all levels. Last kiln opening will be on the Saturday morning, therefore  do not plan to  leave before 9.30 am.
