9A – 2023 Cone 6, finally! – Franco Rampi

February 2 – March 3 2023

Work made on the wheel, fired to cone 6

For all!

Cone 6. Dal tornio al forno

In this four-week long workshop there will be intense throwing practice and exhaustive information on cone six glazes in oxidation atmosphere. Firing to cone six (about 2200F or 1200C) lately has become very popular for more than one reason. Not only does it save fuel (about a 30 % reduction of cost) but also time. An additional benefit is for the kiln itself that is less worn out by the lower temperature.

Techniques taught

The program on the wheel is built on the revision of the basic processes and continues with the practice of shapes derived from the cylinder. It includes the making of different forms including bowls, cups, plates, vases, teapots, pitchers, boxes and lidded forms. We will think through timing, considering when to add spouts and handles, when to trim and when to alter. Finishing processes will include the application of glaze and glazing in layers. The glaze formulation itself will be a topic studied through easy to understand theory backed up by some practical testing.

We will use a clear stoneware clay that enhances the possibilities of a bright, lively colour range in glazing, making pottery forms both for functional and decorative uses.

Teaching method

Teaching is based on demonstrations and much individual attention. A programme of technical and visual talks will complete the demos and the practical work. Students will receive handouts that sum up the information about clay, materials and glazes plus video clips for individual repetition of all techniques shown. Throughout the course, there will be aesthetic considerations that will help participants to make choices. The small group of only eight participants,The continued studio time of one month, the specific exercises, the effectiveness of the demonstrations and the focussed critique will open a perspective for substantial progress.

This intensive course is open to all levels but some previous experience with clay may be an advantage.  A delicious mid day meal is included on all working days.
