36-2022- Sara Kirschen – Coloured Porcelain Techniques
August 28 – September 3 2022
A versatile technique for fine visual and tactile sensations.
Handbuilding. For all levels

Introduction
We will use porcelain techniques and colour to create small objects where the surface decoration is integral to the object. The colours are soft and opaque and the surface, only obtainable with porcelain, is smooth and silky.
Techniques taught
The porcelain techniques are based on the use of stained porcelain slabs that are laminated, cut and overlapped. Subsequently, intervening in a variety of ways, we will obtain random or structured patterns. Likewise, Nerikomi or millefiori elements, as well as liquid slips can be applied, allowing for further visual impact. When finished the slabs, these will then be made into simple objects. for this, we may use plaster moulds or use simple slab building techniques. After the bisq firing, pieces will be polished finely and prepared for the final firing and then fired, worked again with sandpaper to get the very smooth and silky surface.
Teaching method
All processes will be shown with demos and revised with comprehensive technical explanations. Starting from a small project, students will make several objects, followed by the instructor who will give individual attention to each participant.
Logistics
Students will study in the beautiful environment of La Meridiana, hosted in nearby accommodation and a full meal will be served on all course days. The last kiln opening will be in the morning of Saturday, plan your travels so to not leave La Meridiana before 9.30 am.
