Crucial methods for coiling, pinching and surface decoration.
Handbuilding. For all.
Introduction
Coil & Slip is centred around two axes. The first is a reflection on shape and form, while the second extends knowledge about surface treatments.
The techniques
Through studying and drawing simple curves, we will see how proportion can impact the silhouette of a vessel. With a shape in mind, you will be guided through the process of building and refining vessels using coils and finishing tools. You then will be encouraged to experiment with application methods using various slips and oxides, both on the raw clay and on the bisque piece, developing your own unique decorative expression. The techniques taught include different pinching and coiling techniques, various raw clay surface techniques, painting techniques on raw clay and on bisque, resist techniques.
Teaching method
The workshop starts with group work around shape and form. Demonstrations and step-by-step guidance will build confidence in creating harmonious forms using coils. Surface treatments will be demonstrated with an emphasis on experimentation.
