22-2022 Bill van Gilder – The Functional Pot
May 29 – June 11, 2022
Lidded Forms and Lids with stile
The functional pot with lids and forms that complement each other. If you have ever struggled – this workshop is for you. Students will learn to create a wide assortment of well designed, balanced and fully functional forms that incorporate lids. Students will also learn to alter and add an assortment of interesting textures to each of their lidded pots.
We will explore making knobs and strap handles, both pulled and hand built and more. In addition, adding or cutting interesting feet on our forms will be part of our daily work. We’ll achieve our goal of making good lidded forms by visually absorbing daily demos.
One-on-one instruction in addition to repetitious practice at the wheel will be major parts of the daily format. A slide show of and about lidded forms will be presented plus an ongoing discussion of making pots with lids, both old and contemporary. Drawing or sketching pots prior to making will shorten the ‘learning curve’ for students and will be a daily exercise for all. Students will have the option of decorating their work using colored slips for combing, trailing, brushing and pouring in addition to thick slip application.
By the end of the workshop students will be able to think through the design of multiple functional lidded forms and create a perfect fitting lid that compliments those forms. Students will also gain some decorating and finishing inspiration. Students will each choose 12 of their best pots to continue through the firing and glazing process. The workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced skill level. Students must be able to competently throw a 3-pound cylinder.
