44A-2027 – Riccardo Gori – Scaling up on the Wheel

October 31 – November 6 2027

Increase the size of your work on the wheel

Throwing. Intermediate

one- eek courses at La Meridiana

There is something fascinating about throwing on a large scale. Creating substantial, well-proportioned pieces with ease and confidence is a dream for almost every potter. During the course “Scaling Up on the Wheel” master potter Riccardo Gori shared several techniques for throwing and assembling large vessels. Participants quickly learn that making large pieces successfully relies much more on the correct technique than on sheer strength.

Techniques taught

Course participants begin by revising their current techniques and adapting their skills to larger amounts of clay. Afterwards, through practical demonstrations, they explore three practical methods for creating tall or oversized pieces. First, they learn to throw in two or more separate sections, joining the fresh clay and continuing to shape the pots. Next, they allow the sections to firm up and assemble them at the leather-hard stage. The third method involves adding coils to the thrown piece and continuing to throw. Over five busy studio days, in addition to the major techniques, Riccardo introduces the group to additional methods for creating special shapes, such as amphoras and large vases.

Teaching method

The course consists of group demonstrations and individual studio time, during which participants receive personalised feedback from Riccardo. During the demonstrations, we discuss each step in detail to understand factors for successfully throwing large pieces. Riccardo`s exceptional knowledge and passion for the wheel allow him to transmit a wealth of useful information. Through practical demonstrations and discussions, he generously shares numerous tips and techniques developed over his long career. To get out most of this course, participants should be comfortable to throw 1 kilo (2 pounds) of clay with ease. Due to the size of the pieces and the course timeline, no work will be fired. Instead of pots, expect to return home with new skills, confidence, and inspiration to scale up your work!
