42-2019 – Brenda Mc Mahon – Creating Dimensional Wall Art

September 29 – October 12, 2019
Ondulating and dimensional ceramic tile murals
Handbuilding. For all
Learn how to create undulating and dimensional ceramic tile murals during this 14-day hands-on workshop. The program will teach participants several ways to make tiles and how to create volume, texture and dimension not generally see on the wall. It will also reveal new ways of glazing the surface.
Brenda McMahon will demonstrate how to create wall sculptures large and small, while sharing how to adhere, frame and hang these art pieces. In addition to tile making, Brenda shares her unusual and liberating glazing method which allows students to use dozens of colors, lightly layered onto the surface of their tile art. This glazing technique and softness of color is most closely associated with a watercolor palette allowing control and subtlety of color on the clay surface. No more heavy glazes that cover delicate detail. Instead, liberate your self and your color sense with this tile treatment. Finally, Brenda shares techniques on adding natural materials onto the tile mural and the best way to frame these art pieces.
During this 13-day workshop, there will be 7 studio working days, 1 bisque firing day and 1 glaze firing day. Studio days will be filled with techniques offered and ample time for participants to explore those techniques.
The workshop is held in the Nature Studio. Open on three sides, the studio is located at the base of the La Meridiana hill beside the wood kiln, a flight of stairs from the main studios.
