29-2021 – Mette Maya Gregersen – Clay waves

29-2021 – Mette Maya Gregersen – Clay waves
July 15 – 24 2021

A workshop about spontaneity and study through the use of specific materials like paperclay and plastermolds.

Introduction

On our first day will explore structure and shapes. In other words, we will string bamboo blinds, modelling them into visual ideas. Subsequently, these bamboo structures will be used as the base for plaster moulds to be made on the second day. After that, we will be able to create shapes with paperclay, adding interest through the variation of forms, lines and colour.

Techniques taught

We will learn how to make plaster and paperclay and how to use it in various ways: firstly on our plaster moulds and in addition by wrapping it around wooden structures in several layers. As a result, a cornucopia of possibilities will open up. When firing, the bamboo will burn off, leaving a structure in clay. The making techniques used are hand building and press moulding whereas for colour effects there will be the application of oxides or slips to the wet clays. With these techniques, we will strive to achieve expressive lines and forms.

Teaching method

Throughout the workshop, Mette Maya Gregersen will demonstrate the processes and assist each participant in mastering the techniques. As a result, students will learn techniques as well as to develop proper visual ideas.

Studio space and logistics

The workshop will be taught in the Nature Studio in the gardens of La Meridiana, to be reached climbing a set of steps. There will be one free day while the work  is fire, an opportunity  for the exploration of the beauty of Tuscany, conductive to further inspiration. At the end of the workshop, most of the dry work will be bisqued and a selection of this will be glazed and fired.
