26 -2026 – Susan Nemeth – Inlaid Coloured Porcelain
June 21 – 27 2026
Intriguing designs and satinlike surfaces without glaze
Handbuilding, Porcelain. Some experience required
During the workshop Inlaid Coloured Porcelain by Susan Nemeth, we will explore how to control line, blocks of colour, and half tones. Using various techniques and working with layers of coloured slips and porcelain, participants learn to create subtle patterns and imagery.
Techniques taught
In this handbuilding workshop, Susan Nemeth teaches her unique method of decoration. First, we learn how to laminate sheets of coloured porcelain and inlay them with pattern or imagery. Later, these will be lightly beaten, rolled and stretched and afterwards formed into shape.
In the next part, working with your own images, we will find ways to adapt your ideas to create porcelain collages. Your inlaid coloured porcelain slabs will be used to create bowls, vases and/or wall plaques. In this part of the workshop, Susan will demonstrate press moulding and other slab-building methods. Buried in sand to prevent warping, we will fire the work to cone 10, to create a smooth, satin-like, matt and vitrified surface.
Teaching method
During the workshop, students will learn how to make and use numerous layers of clays and slips. We will cut and rub through the layers to reveal the hidden colours. Participants will practice ways to control the distortion of the pattern, which eventually becomes a tool for beautiful effects. In this advanced course, Susan will demonstrate how can coloured slips beneath the inlays can be used to form both very fine and bold outlines. Furthermore, she will show how rubbing around these areas creates subtle grades of colour. We will discover half-tone effects and shading with coloured slips and additionally learn to create emphasis by revealing the decorative edge strata.
