25-2020 – Heesoo Lee – Observation, Nature and Place

 June 14 -27, 2020
Subtle imagery with depth, combining form, sculptural techniques and painting.
Handbuilding. Some experience required

You will have the time to go through the complete working process used by Heesoo Lee to create her three dimensional paintings and landscapes on porcelain vessels.
We will make simple hand built or thrown forms. The addition of fresh clay to the surface creates depth and perspective. For further  and finer detail, pieces will be finished with sgraffito.
Brushwork will be practiced intensely: first testing brushstrokes and the colour palette on tiles, then working on our bisqued pieces.
The use of underglazes is similar to watercolour techniques and allows for much subtelty. Projects will be tailored to eaches interest, with a special emphasis on landscape and perspective. We will use our imagination and recollection to create imagery and textures. Most of the dry work will be bisqued and a selection of this will be glazed and fired.
Heesoo Lee is the perfect companion and instructor for this adventure. Generous in teaching, her passion and delightful personality will make the time spent in and out of the studio very special. Fieldtrips as a group to the surrounding Tuscan Beauty spots are part of the programme. Basic handbuilding and/or wheelthrowing skills are necessary.

Heesoo Lee is a studio potter based in Helena, Montana. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Heesoo earned her BA in Art from Ewha University. When relocating to the Us, she relearned Ceramics from an American perspective, while integrating Korean aesthetics and ideas. She shows and sells her work throughout the U.S. and abroad.
