20-2023 – Riccardo Gori – Scaling up on the Wheel
May 14 – 20 2023
Augment the size of your work on the wheel
For intermediate and advanced
Scaling Up on the Wheel is taught by a master potter and presents several techniques for throwing and assembling big pots.
Over the five full workdays of Scaling Up there will be practical demonstrations of three principal techniques for throwing large/ tall pieces. The first method consists of throwing two or more separate parts, which are then joined while still fresh. The second method also starts with throwing the pieces separately, but they are joined at the leather hard stage. A third method entails the addition of a coil to the thrown part. In addition to these major techniques, Riccardo Gori has more methods for the creation of special shapes, such as amphoras.
Each step will be demonstrated in detail and all the factors that contribute to the success of the pots will be analysed thoroughly. Students may learn and practice these methods with the amount of clay they feel comfortable with, however it is recommended that students arrive with the ability to throw and centre 1 kilo (2 pounds) of clay comfortably.
Ricccardo Gori’s exceptional knowledge and passion for the wheel are outstanding features of his teaching. Through practical demonstrations and much discussion he will transmit an exhaustive amount of information. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. The instructor will relate his tips and tricks with generosity. Due to the size of the pieces and the course timeline, no work will be fired.
The course is taught in Italian and English. A delicious lunch will be served every day and acommodation is included in the price. This course is designed for the intermediate and advanced level.
Riccardo Gori was born in Florence. After studies in Geology, in 1982 he started his training in ceramics, earning the diploma of Master of Throwing. By collaborating with artists, masters and historical workshops in Tuscany and Faenza he has expanded his knowledge of traditional and innovative techniques on the wheel and in glazing. He likes to teach in schools and educational workshops. In 2002 he opened his own studio, where he produces stoneware and porcelain objects and sculptures. In collaboration with his wife Silvia Ferraro he designs porcelain jewels with crystalline glazes. His work is shown in galleries in Italy and Europe and has been published in Ceramic Review. www.ceramichegori.it
