14A-2025 – Antoinette Badenhorst – Understanding Porcelain

Introduction

Understanding Porcelain is a workshop to gain knowledge of the medium porcelain which has different requirements than other clay bodies. In fact, when understanding these specific quualities, it will become easier to use and to create incredibly fine and intricate objects with it. Different from the naturally found porcelain in ancient China, Western porcelain is manmade. With it came characteristics that need specific knowledge in order to be successful as a porcelain artist. Understanding Porcelain is the workshop that teaches that knowledge.

Techniques taught

During the workshop we will work simultaneously on 3- 5 objects in a combination of hand building and wheel throwing techniques. In that way students will learn to control the drying phases of the porcelain. They will also learn to work with porcelain beyond the wheel, because Antoinette will show all possible techniques that occurr during the altering process.

Teaching method

Students will be allowed to practice on several pieces on the wheel or by hand building in order to practice extensively. At every step  Antoinette will control the quality and in the end make sure that just the best five pieces get fired. She would like to encourage students to bring samples or images of their work so that she can understand their needs from the beginning.
