24 Layer over layer
Surface composition with engobes
and glazes
June 5th – 11th 2016
Ute Naue-Müller

Handbuilding, decoration. Non beginners.

This one week workshop is dedicated to the exploration of colour harmony and richly texturized surfaces. Building up layers of colour with slips and engobes, adding marks and lines, we may obtain intriguing results. Raku firing or gas or electric firing will further influence the final result. Through detailed explanations and demonstrations, Ute will guide the students to the understanding of the theory and practice of a successful surface decoration.
The workshop contents includes:
The base of colour theories;
The practice of application of slips and glaze and the combination of the two;
Elements of composition;
The use of resist wax, paper, foil or tape;
Texturing with stamps, incision and sgraffito.
We will press mould simple bowls on which to practice. Participants may also bring bisque fired pieces from home to practice further.
Ute Naue-Müller will assist the students in the composition process individually and results will be shared with the group. This workshop is a prosecution of the workshops Ute Naue-Müller has hold at La Meridiana in the past and is ideal for all those who wish to deepen their skills and methods for an superb colour composition and rich surface.

The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition (6 – 8 hours per day, studio open 12 hours)
All materials and firings
Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 140 €
Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
A freshly prepared Tuscan Lunch with wine on all working days

Ute Grossmann was born in Dresden, Germany in 1960. Having originally studied Chemical Engineering, she gravitated towards the arts with studies in painting and graphics at the  Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden in 1998/1999. She became a member of the Association of Artists as a freelance ceramicist in 2003 and has since developed a considerable portfolio of ceramic vessels and sculptural objects. Her early work also involved doing mosaic sculptures in public places. All her ceramic art still displays mosaic aspects, but are now also mixed with raku, which has become a more prominent feature over the last years.
Recently she has also introduced porcelain clay with finely structured graphic surfaces.
