Throwing. Beginners and advanced

This ten-day workshop is suitable both for beginners and advanced. With two instructors available, there will be the opportunity to receive focussed one-on – one instruction. The course will start with a concentration on throwing skills. The practice of different ways of manipulating clay, from preparation to throwing and finishing processes will expand familiarity with the medium for all. Beginners will practise the basic processes, and more experienced throwers will be encouraged to increase the scale and scope of their work by making composite and altered forms. A review of trimming and finishing skills will complete the throwing section. We will use a white stoneware clay that is the ideal base for the type of firing we are going to experience, an oxidation firing to cone 10 in a neutral, or oxidation atmosphere. This will open possibilities for a remarkable colour range.
There will be the technical information necessary to understand the clay body and glaze composition, and much practical exercise of how actually best glaze your pots, be it by dipping or pouring.

The total cost of the course is 1650 euros; Single price supplement: 260 Euros.

La MeridianaPietro Elia Maddalena studied ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. After two more years of work at Dartington Workshop, he returned to Italy where in 1980 he established a studio in Certaldo, near Florence. Pietro is the founder and director of the International School of Ceramics LA MERIDIANA located in Tuscany, Italy. Also instructor and maker he says of himself : “ I am totally and continuously interested in the process of making. I see the craft object as a projection of the human spirit and the culture in which it was nurtured. In elaborating concept, material and process, my ultimate goal is the expression of beauty through sophisticated and sensual forms”.

La MeridianaFranco Rampi was born in Domodossola. He started working as a potter in 1981. After an apprenticeship in England and a cycle of studies in Italy he opened his own studio in Tuscany.
He produces both functional objects in small series and one off pieces. He works mainly in stoneware, whilst continuing his research on clays, slips and forms.
For ten years he has been teaching and also collaborating with La Meridiana for five years, mainly assisting John Colbeck in throwing courses.www.francorampi.it
