23 Silkscreen print on clay: Torso with images
Transferring images and decoration with an innovative technique
Maria Geszler-Garzuly
May 29th – June 4th 2016

Handbuilding. For all

The sculpting skills of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks were wonderful. They modeled the human body and the torso in a very skillful way. A long time ago these sculptures were all in perfect conditions, but the centuries have left their mark. Today we find this exciting and impressive.
In these days, the torso has a new meaning and we will create torsos using stoneware and doing this in a contemporary style - we are going to 'decorate' them. We will create and use screen-print 'tattoos' (based on own pictures and photos ) with which to decorate our sculptures. To do so, we will learn the process of transferring the images with the possibility of superimposing drawing at the next stage of the process. We will make our own screens, applicate and illuminate them in the dark room of the screen-laboratory. We will also produce small, fine amulets using porcelain, to be decorated with screen-printed images. The work will be single fired in the electrical kiln at 1140 C.

The total cost of the course is 980 Euro; Single price supplement: 140 Euros.

The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition (6 – 8 hours per day, studio open 12 hours)
All materials and firings
Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 140 €
Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
A freshly prepared Tuscan Lunch with wine on all working days

La MeridianaMaria Geszler-Garzuly „We are part of the wonderful or dreadful nature that surrounds us - this philosophy of Rousseau inspired me during decades for creation of several art pieces. It is the way I look at the landscape when I make photography, this is the way I touch clay and porcelain, when I take it in my hands. This is how I perceive the wet clay and my silk-screened images, as I organically curve my pictures and build my sculptures. This desire leads to the hills, endless meadows and waters and seashores, to dissolve and to get lost in "nothingness", "infinity".”

Maria Geszler-Garzuly completed her studies at the Academy of Art and Craft in Budapest in 1965. She worked as an industrial designer between 1966-80, setting up her own studio in 1975.
Her award winning work can be found in museums and collections all over the world. Her competent and sparkling teaching style is appreciated by the students of her numerous visiting professorships at universities in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, England and Scotland.
