October 2nd – 15th 2016

Raku. For all

This will be a hands-on workshop exploring surface decoration and naked raku firing techniques. Participants will gain technical ceramics skills, as well as learn to use personal patterns, symbols and images to articulate their understanding of the world. During morning sessions of the first week, the Jacobson’s will demonstrate their methods of wheel throwing, slab construction and sculpting vessel forms, mica clay infusion, and burnishing. Afternoons will be devoted to one-on-one guidance from Kate and Will as students practice technique and explore imagery.

Participants will have opportunities to work both independently as well as collaboratively. Excursions into the countryside will involve sketching and photographing images. In this way, we will gain a deeper understanding of how artists create a personal language in order to interpret and create visual manifestations of interior dialogues.

The second week actively engages participants in naked raku firings. After Kate and Will demonstrate application methods of various masks, a resist slip and sacrificial glaze, students will glaze and fire their own work. Ample time and materials will be provided for each student to complete several pieces.
For students of all abilities.

The total cost of the course is 2300 Euro; Single price supplement: 280€
Spouses are welcome. They are entitled to everything offered by La Meridiana as in the agreement except what pertains workshop and ceramic activities. The cost for a non- clay participant is 1200Euro.

La MeridianaKate and Will Jacobson have been collaborating artists for thirty-five years. Their Hawaii open-air studio is on a one-lane country road and graced by a huge mango tree and an abundance of tropical flowers. They enjoy a sweeping ocean view and this quiet natural environment is evident in their work.
Their current body of work is inspired by the concept of “flow”. Hawaii is a very elemental island. There is a continual awareness and respect for the fierce power and tender fragility of life. When we look at their art, we get a glimpse into their world filled with wonder and awe.
The Jacobson’s are widely recognized as the originators of Naked Raku. This firing technique reveals the unadorned, earthly beauty of clay. Another innovative method they are known for is using colored mica and terra sigilatta to achieve the shimmering luster of their surfaces. Their work has been exhibited throughout the world, won numerous awards and is included in many corporate, private and public collections.
