July 9th – 15th 2017

Surface decoration. Advanced

This course is perfect for students who either have experience of ceramics or have attended a previous course with Carolyn Genders at La Meridiana, students who would like to take their ideas further and want to explore fully techniques that they may have tried on a previous course, thus building up a body of work that will continue to inspire and inform long after the course.
For those who like the once fired vitreous slip alternative to the glazed surface, this course offers the opportunity to delve deeper into the process and application of vitreous slips using techniques in far more depth than on previous courses and bringing in the new element of print on clay.
Students will make slabbed forms and press moulded bowls from white earthenware on which to explore the techniques of water etching, wax and latex resists, and other advanced application of vitreous slips, as well as print techniques using vitreous slips and oxides. There will be a firing half way through the course.
Carolyn will introduce each technique with a demonstration and explain how it could most effectively be used. She will discuss with each student individually ways of translating their ideas onto the clay surface, discussing not only surface but the relationship of surface and form. Students will have plenty of time to concentrate on practicing and developing the techniques that most interest them using their own source material as inspiration. For further explanation and inspiration there will be a slide presentation on one evening.
On the last day, while final pieces are being fired, Carolyn will give a demonstration of alternative ways of coiling and there will be a chance to try them tough those pieces can not be fired. She will also give out notes of all that has been done on the course and discuss firing temperatures etc.
At the final opening of the kiln on the Saturday morning there will be a brief resume to look at and discuss the final results.

The total cost of the course is € 1080, Single price supplement: € 150.
The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition (6 – 8 hours per day, studio open 12 hours)
All materials and firings
Lodging in double room; single room on request, add € 150
Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
A freshly prepared Tuscan Lunch with wine on all working days
Discounted price of € 1900 for those who will attend course I and II.
