Introduction

Over the past 50 years, raku firing techniques have developed enormously, offering a wide range of surface possibilities. In this workshop, we will explore the aesthetic possibilities of combining coloured glazes, smoke effects, the use of stencils and the application of gold leaves and copper.

Techniques taught

Martin Mindermann pays tribute to shape, structure and colour. The surface of his vessels offer the space for a rhythmic interplay of vivid elements, inserted into the craquelé-structure achieved with the Raku firing. He will teach his method of painting and spraying of mixed and ready-made glazes. What makes his work outstanding is the use of stencils, copper and gold leaves. Therefore, students will have the opportunity to experiment with those elements.  At the end, the Raku firing, “a cultivated form of pyromania” as Mindermann likes to call it, is a powerful and decisive moment for the outcome of each piece.

Teaching method

Making will cover the first part of the workshop. Furthermore, in order to experiment extensively, students will be asked to bring some bisqued work, preferably with flat surfaces that lend themselves beautifully to the work with stencil. Several Raku firings will provide sufficient time and opportunity to understand the technique.

Studio space and logistics

Group size is of maximum 10 participants. Participants should have a basic experience of working with clay and a basic knowledge of fundamental concepts in ceramics. The course is taught in English.

The artist

Martin Mindermann was born in Bremen. After his studies, he started to work as a potter in 1990. Since 2006, he runs his own studio in Oyten. He has demonstrated and taught workshops internationally and lectures at the Academy of Arts of Bremen since 2005. He has won many Art prizes; his work is found in public collections in Europe, Asia and America and featured in many publications.  He regularly shows his work in galleries and international exhibitions .http://www.martin-mindermann.de
