A Woodfiring experience
Stephen Mickey
April 29th – May 12th, 2018
Throwing, Woodfiring. Beginners and advanced

This class is suitable for all levels of experience. I have been teaching for many years and one of my specialties is teaching beginners the basics of touch. I have a method that I am very proud of and I know will be useful to all beginners who come with us on this venture. There will be plenty of one on one involvement. I can meet you wherever you are as a potter from beginner to seasoned experienced potters. We will all share in the excitement of firing the single chambered Noborigama wood fired kiln and experiment with glazes, slips and stacking techniques. The experience is kind of like a slumber party, waking with friends around and joining in on the common goal to make good pots and have a successful firing that sends you home with pieces of unusual beauty.

As a potter I like to live on the intuitive side.  There is a reason to make what you are making and it is worth careful examination. We are looking for the more subtle realm of seeing the emotion and power in the forms of the work we make. My goal is for your work to feel like you are as a person.   A lifetime goal is to make work that when handled by another potter, they recognize the YOU in your work as they touch it.  I will teach one hand throwing to facilitate touch. We will work on a variety of forms from tumblers to teapots. I have fired with wood as a fuel for 30 years and have a few tricks and techniques to share. I am looking forward with enthusiasm to meet you in the studio and have that fun of getting to know each other. While our work is drying to be bisque fired we will take some field trips exploring the beauty of Tuscany.

La MeridianaStephen Mickey:
“I had the good fortune of needing an elective to fill out my college schedule. I signed up for pottery with Warren MacKenzie and was taught exclusively by Leach trained potters. In the first class I realized this was a life changing event and I no longer pursued Medicine. It’s a great life. My graduate work was done at Notre Dame University. I have recently retired from Mt. Hood Community College where I ran the ceramics program and was departmental chair for years. I am a full time studio potter and rebuilt my wood kiln in the summer of 2017. Firing with wood is thrilling and makes one brave. I love teaching and in my classes there are no dumb questions. Let’s get to know each other. Yours, Stephen”
