On Centre – A twelve week residential course based on throwing, clay bodies, glazes and firing

This course is aimed at committed people who wish to develop in-depth skills for a professional approach to clay.

It is intended to gap a more and more noticeable lack in the institutional offer for qualified development in the field of functional ceramics.
The programme will cover fundamental and advanced throwing and trimming skills, material and firing technology and visual awareness. Students will stay and study in the supportive environment of La Meridiana for twelve weeks and receive daily tuition form a foremost ceramicists of broad experience.


La Meridiana Ken Shipley has worked in ceramics for over 30 years and began his career as an apprentice to both Charles Counts in Rising Fawn, GA and Bill Ashley in Chattanooga, TN. Ken's work covers many aspects of ceramics, from production pottery to large one of a kind pieces, both wheel thrown and hand built. He uses high fire reduction, salt/soda, wood fire, and electric kilns. He holds a B.A. in Religious Studies and the Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He holds a position as Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.
His work is found in private and public collections and has been exhibited widely in the United States, Italy, Germany, Japan, France, China, and England.

La MeridianaFranco Rampi was born in Domodossola. He started working as a potter in 1981. After an apprenticeship in England and a cycle of studies in Italy he opened his own studio in Tuscany.
He produces both functional objects in small series and one off pieces. He works mainly in stoneware, whilst continuing his research on clays, slips and forms.
For ten years he has been teaching collaborating with La Meridiana, mainly assisting John Colbeck in throwing courses.www.francorampi.it
