History
Paolo Staccioli was born in Scandicci, Florence in 1943.
He concentrated on painting from his teens right up to his first exhibition in 1973.
From 1983 to 1987 he continued with his painting and exhibited his work in several galleries but towards the end of the eighties he became interested in ceramic art, in particular in basso rilievo (bas-relief) in terracotta.
He experimented on glazing and through the technique of firing with reduced oxygen, under the teaching of the craftsman, Umberto Santandrea from Faenza, he began researching lustres through the use of clay oxides and salts.
Proceeding with this research, he abandoned painting altogether, transferring his subjects on to vases and other ceramic objects. He then moved on to his first experience using plastics and it is thanks to these that in the nineties he began to have some interesting results.
In these years, he took part many times in Arte Fiera in Bologna, in the Festa della Ceramica of Montelupo Fiorentino, in the Biennale di Ceramica in Faenza, intensifying his exhibiting in galleries and museums in Italy and in the rest of Europe; in 1999 he took part in the International Festival of Ceramic Art in Aberystwyth in Wales and in the Ceramic Millenium Festival in Amsterdam, Holland.
In 2000 he designed a huge Cavallo cavalcato da un putto alato, a bronze figure that inaugurated the Parco Museo of Poggio Valicaia in the hills near Scandicci. He has also had numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, such as in the Museo Richard Ginori in Florence, the International Fair of Contemporary Art in Kirchberg, Luxembourg and Lineart in Ghent in Belgium.
In his workshops of Scandicci and Montelupo, his research is continuing with the designing of new characters such as Warriors, Travellers on carriages and boats, Cardinals with new figures painted with lustre glazes on vases and other ceramic objects.
There is a personal exhibition of his in the Museo degli Argenti and the Museo delle Porcellane in Palazzo Pitti in Florence. In 2007 you can visit his work in the Museo Archeologico in Fiesole (Florence); he has also taken part in the collective exhibition “Sculture da indossare” (Sculptures for wearing) backed by the Comune of Forte dei Marmi, Lucca.
