September 29th – October 5th, 2019

Handbuilding. Intermediate and advanced

For the first time, Dorothy Feibleman will teach a workshop at La Meridiana: The course will be based on colour, light and structural imaging. She will talk about using laminated and translucent porcelain for jewellery, sculpture, lighting, and functional work. Lamination is known in Japanese as Neriage or Nerikomi. She will start with a slide lecture of the history of translucent laminated coloured clay and of her personal history. She will demonstrate processes for laminating different translucent coloured porcelain clay bodies and slips and discuss the effects of including light sources.

She will demonstrate coloured porcelain techniques using hand building, throwing, & extruding. She will demonstrate her method of extruding elements with a vertical Brent extruder with parts that she designed and then compose objects with a centering device and plaster moulds (patent pending).
Technical information about many skills, techniques and materials will be discussed.
In the mornings she will start demonstrating different techniques and talking about the technical aspects of materials: colour gradation making, use of colour, colour and light, movement of materials in relation to structural patterns, surface information and finishing techniques. The afternoons will be allocated to the students’ personal projects. She will help kickstart beginners with realistic projects of their interest and support the ideas of the more advanced.
The aim is to make sure everyone can leave with something fired. She will also show how to ensure you can carry not dry smaller pieces safely home in your carry-on.

The total cost of the course is 1300 euros
Deposit: 400 euros
The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition of 6 – 8 hours per day
Studio open 12 hours per day

Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 200 euros
Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast, final dinner
A freshly prepared Tuscan Lunch with wine on all working days

Dorothy Feibleman started working with coloured clay in 1969. She imagined, by looking at glass mosaics and millefiori glass beads how she could arrive at similar structures in porcelain. She received a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in May  of 1973. She constantly makes tests and continues to be fascinated by the materials and by developing new methods. Throughout her prolific career, she has been awarded many grants, residencies and prizes. She has exhibited internationally and been featured in publications worldwide.  Her work is in the London V&A, the New York Metropolitan Museum and other international collections.
