35 Kamigama
Japanese techniques and the art of daily life
Chisato Kuroki - Website
August 26 – September 1st, 2018

Handbuilding, kiln building. For all

This workshop is a small introduction to Japanese aesthetics and philosophy.
Chisato Kuroki will guide the participants in a five-day immersion. We will learn about material and immaterial aspects of Japanese culture, for a celebration of fire and earth. Learning different processes of Japanese moulding techniques for tableware will allow us to create several objects, to be fired in the Kamigama paper kiln for high temperature that we will build and fire during the workshop. The paper kiln is built using folded and wetted newspaper. There will also be a Raku firing with Chisatos matt glazes and other materials. We will practise some calligraphy and Japanese painting. Japanese calligraphy and painting is an exercise that fosters concentration and leads to the understanding of the concept of emptiness. On the last day, we close the circle with an appreciation of the art of daily life through a mini workshop of Japanese cuisine serving on the tableware that we created in this course.
Takes place at the Nature Studio in the gardens which may be reached climbing a set of steps.

The total cost of the course is 1080 euros; Single price supplement: 150 Euros.
The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition of 6 – 8 hours per day

La MeridianaChisato Kuroki is born and has studied ceramics in Japan and Spain. She grew up in Takayama. When moving to Tokyo she experienced the great contrast of the contemporary metropolis versus the traditional lifestyle of the provincial town of her childhood. She has moved to Barcellona 23 years ago, where she found the balance between those two extremes. Barcellona provided much stimulus to her work, through its atmosphere and the architecture of Gaudi, so impressively inspired by nature and its forms. For her work, Chisato Kuroki uses both the traditional techniques of her country and her unique techniques with Zen philosophy as the nurturing background. She does not search for perfection but rather each piece to be in touch with nature and a direct expression of her emotions coming out of her deep inside. Since many years, she teaches workshops and is invited to international symposiums. Her work is exhibited in Spain, China and Japan.
